Janos Deri: CONCORDIA

Between departure and abyss

With Janos Deri, the imprfct space is opening up to an artist who works at the interface of aesthetics and technology like no other. With a background in sculpture and design, the digital artist and filmmaker creates visual worlds of haunting power - shaped by his decades of experience in the fields of film, exhibitions, design and brand communication. With the help of artificial intelligence, his works develop a distinctive visual language that moves between theatrical expression and technological innovation - and in which subtlety and opulence are deliberately superimposed.

With CONCORDIA, an immersive staging is now being created in close collaboration that makes his visual language physically tangible in a curated exhibition context - as a multi-layered contribution to the ongoing transformation of the imprfct space.

Little room for reflection

CONCORDIA is not an image, but a mirror. It does not flood in order to impress - but to make visible how little space remains for reflection in a world that is increasingly losing itself in images. The work poses radical questions: How do images shape our perception? How do they generate power today? And what remains of the image when everything becomes an image?

Silent confrontation

In animated scenes, CONCORDIA unfolds not as a linear narrative, but as an eruptive stream of fragments, symbols and aesthetic contrasts. Inspired by classical works such as Rembrandt's Night Watch or Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, historical references, surreal impressions and futuristic scenes condense into a contemporary battle painting. The compositions move between baroque pathos, documentary directness, futuristic coldness and avant-garde poetry. It is only through this strong interaction - between the bizarre, the documentary and artificial exaggeration - that the motifs reinforce each other.

As a recurring motif in CONCORDIA, horses mark transitions between scenes, epochs and emotions - symbols of flight, power and the restlessness of a world in motion.

The architecture of the imprfct space becomes part of the staging: two large-format LED walls are embedded in acute-angled structures and force visitors to physically engage with the work - in the literal sense: to get up close, to walk through narrow passages, to move among other guests. The space becomes a stage for a collective choreography.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at Artlife for the realization of the construction measures.

Speaking against the disappearance

Speaking mouths appear alongside the visual overpowering. Reduced, isolated, insistent. They whisper censored terms, quote forbidden language, fragment meaning.

These voices create a counterweight to the exuberant flow of images - and address what threatens to disappear in the noise of the aesthetic: language, substance, attitude.

One of these voices is created by the visitors themselves: They type their abridged answers to questions like „What must not be lost?“ or  „What would you whisper into history?“ into an old commodore-computer. These terms are then vocalized by AI, synchronized with animated mouths and embedded into the work.

The terms are also expressed physically: in cooperation with the Frankfurt label NIL+MON, an exclusive shirt with the imprint "BANNED" became part of the staging. Selected terms are projected onto it – as a textile projection surface for words that disappear elsewhere.

The title CONCORDIA - Latin for concord - does not stand for what has been achieved, but for what is longed for. For a resonance that repeatedly eludes amidst contrasts, breaks and overlaps.

The new imprfct space makes this state of limbo visible: as a choreographed irritation, as an aesthetic echo of a world that is losing itself in the visual - and in which meaning must be renegotiated.
